Water damage in your home can cause thousands of dollars in damage. The sooner you realize that you have a leak the easier it will be to take care of. But, what are the tell tale signs of water damage? What are the signs that you have a water leak?
1. Smells and Odors
Damp and wet areas after time begin to have a musty or mildewy smell. Smells are very hard to describe, but you will know them when you smell them! A musty or mildewy odor is that smell when you get home from a week long vacation and realize you forgot a load of laundry in the washer! Yep, that’s the one!
2. Discoloration and Stains
Often times, you can see the damage from a water or leak. Water will stain or discolor the paint on a wall or ceiling. This can happen when part of the wall or ceiling gets wet from an intermittent leak and then dries. You may not notice a problem from a leaky roof until days after a large rainstorm when the moisture dries.
3. Peeling and Cracking Paint
If the ceiling or wall is not able to dry you may not notice discoloration or staining. Instead, the drywall will start the swell. This swelling will start to push against the paint and cause it to crack or peel. This is likely from a consistent leak and you may have a leaking pipe or other plumbing problem.
Sometimes water damage shows up in the form of mold from a leak behind a wall that is not usually visible. Mold shouldn’t be taken lightly and can cause many health issues for your family. If you have mold, you have a water problem of some sort.
5. Unexplained High Water Bill
There maybe no clear indication of water damage in your home. A utility bill from your water company that is higher than usual with no explanation might be your first sign of a water problem. Keep your open for other signs and start looking for potential plumbing leaks and problems.
